With the help of our partners and grant funding from CAL FIRE and California ReLeaf, this program connects the community with tree planting and ongoing care in the urban environment of the City of SLO to green spaces and actively combat climate change.

Tree icons on the map indicate all of the locations where we have planted trees! The types and sizes of trees that are planted are part of ECOSLO’s grant funding cycles. Local tree experts and City of SLO staff have approved these urban-appropriate and climate-friendly trees. Do you have specific questions about the trees being planted? What Tree Species We Plant & Why

Featured

Island Oak

An evergreen Oak that is great for landscapes as it can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Tree is deer resistant and attracts birds, squirrels. Has low water use and a large canopy of up to 40 feet.

Engelmann Oak

This tree is excellent for urban environments with its very low water use and moderate root damage. Attracts birds, squirrels and is deciduous.

Cork Oak

A beautiful evergreen oak species with light gray leaves and acorns. The tree is deer resistant and attracts birds, squirrels. Low water use rating and moderate root damage potential.

Willow Myrtle

A great tree for temperate coastal areas. Provides shade with up to a 30 ft. canopy, can tolerate heat and uses minimal water. The tree has showy white flowers in the spring and weeping leaves that make it beautiful year round.

Coast Live Oak

This tree has a great large spreading canopy. It can be spotted along California’s landscape and is very characteristic to the rolling hills of SLO. Also is evergreen and has medium water use.

Chinese Elm

Partly deciduous to evergreen tree with dark green leaves that change in the Fall. Resistant to deer and has medium water usage. Native to China, Japan, North Korea, and Vietnam and can be found growing around town and on the Cal Poly Campus.

Chinese Flame Tree

A characteristic tree to California’s urban landscapes. The tree has fragrant and bright yellow flowers as well as fruits that resemble Chinese lanterns. Has medium water usage, low root damage potential, and is deer resistant.

Chinese Pistache

Known for being a great street and park tree, the Chinese pistache is a favorite of the SLO landscape. The tree turns bright red or orange in the fall and is deciduous. The tree is deer resistant and attracts birds while having low water use and root damage potential.
